I'm thinking about buying a rifle. Not for self defense, just for having fun shooting at targets. And maybe hunting. I've never owned one before. My only experience with firearms is shooting a pistol as a kid.

Convince me if this is a worthwhile investment of around 600-2,000 USD or not. Lecture my ignorant brain on the intricacies of rifles and how I should not be a ret0rd with them. Or use this thread to discuss guns at your leisure. Whichever or. ヽ(´ー｀)ノ

Not where I live, but I guess it would depend on which state you're from. Only thing dealers here ask for is just a background check and ID to prove your age. So just some paperwork to file.

an ar-15 is not a hunting rifle, particularly if it's chambered in .223 or 5.56 (in fact, it might be illegal in your area to hunt deer or similar with such a small round, you will need something bigger)

make sure you actually get one chambered in something useful if that is something you want to do even as a side thing, although again, a typical AR-15 is not actually made for hunting use (but there are so many different kinds of "AR-15" that you can totally find something that is, just talk with the guy at your gun shop and mention that you don't really know much; if the place isn't complete shit, he'll actually try and help instead of trying to fleece you with some bullshit)

Personally, I want a shotgun. I'm a cheap bitch and I go shooting with my friend and we share his gun, but I want to go shooting on my own.
Shit is fun as hell. Shotguns are fun as hell. I have another buddy who has a really shit shotgun (we went clay shooting and we barely hit shit when using his gun) but it was still fun as hell.

the wasr was a good choice, i considered getting one but bought a vz58 instead
though, i think a better option for someone new to guns would've been a .22lr or 9mm carbine because the ammo is so cheap and the recoil is light, yet it can still be used to take down most animals smaller than a deer
for that sake i'm building a gun from a ww2 era suomi kit chambered in 9mm, since you can just plink all day with it
