I am american, and the first place I heard about it was on here a couple years ago. Because someone said the flag looks like it could be a national flag for Heyuri. ヽ(´ー｀)ノ

I started learning Esperanto at one point, then gave up out of laziness/un-usefulness. The only constructed language I know is Toki Pona.

I kinda want to learn Interlingua, which is deliberately designed to be a very generic Romance language and is thus supposed to be highly understandable across Europe as a result, but I'm learning Japanese right now. Maybe it'll be my next goal.

For me, the most attractive part of Esperanto is that all the speakers are interested in linguistics or something related to that. I see it as more of a hobby than an actual means of communication
